I’ve taken the time to put together brief descriptions of some of the projects I’ve been involved in. This is by no means an exhaustive list. I’ve chosen to focus on those which I thought were particularly interesting, gave me the greatest opportunity for growth or had the greatest potential impact on their respective communities.

They are sorted so that the newest entries appear at the top. Its worth noting however that the date I wrote the post may not reflect the time frame I was involved in the project. Also, some rather interesting projects are now rather old but not necessarily stale.

The Notable Mentions

  • MicrobiomeDB R package suite
This project made me feel like I was flying. It was pure simple fun from start to finish, except I’m not sure it will ever truly be finished. Better still, I think I might have genuinely built something potentially useful to people, which is a very nice feeling. Background The original request was for something…
  • The OrthoMCL Protein Tree
This is a story of collaboration, both within the VEuPathDB organization and to some degree outside of it. In the end I think we collectively produced something both functional and fairly pretty. I even got to learn something new! Background This project was for a website called OrthoMCL.org, which is a database of what we…
  • The Standalone Map
The map project changed me. I think it’s still changing me. It’s taught me so many things, professionally and personally. Perhaps the most important lessons were about the importance of product and project management and how to respect my own time more. The task, in short, was to build a standalone map application (SAM). We…
  • Adventures in Shiny
I don’t know where to start with this one. I think I either need to write a book about my experience with Shiny, or nothing at all. I’ll try to do something in between. Wish me luck. I think of this project as the one primarily responsible for helping me make the transition from junior…
  • RNASeq Transcription Summary
This is a project which made me really internalize the lesson that you need to use the right tools for the job. That’s something I’d been slowly learning over a couple years, but this represented a turning point. At the beginning of this effort I was writing R and by the end I was writing…
